Coming close to winning a title or making the playoffs and not winning a title is the exact same thing as not making the playoffs and not winning. Because in the NBA 2nd place gets you nothing. If you cant win that title then you sit with the rest of the league in the same place. There are no consolation prizes lol. its #1 or nothing. the 30th ranked team gets exactly what the 2nd place team gets. Thats nothing!!

had to stay to comment on this....

I think this is where you are wrong...the teams that make the palyoffs get MUCH more than the teams that do NOT make the playoffs...

they get more revenue...more sales via merchandise, tickets, concessions... there is a HUGE difference in NOT making the playoffs... makign the playoffs and making it DEEP in the playoffs...

ASK the BUCKS if they would trade places with the MAGIC ... making it to the NBA FINALS and losing... I GURANTEE you they would say HELL YES

in a heart beat ANY GM or ANY player would tell you that making the playoffs is a huge deal... then making it further and further in the playoffs...

NO WAY any player, coach, owner or GM would state what you said above...

"the 30th ranked team gets exactly what the 2nd place team gets."

if you mean they dont get a shiney trophy... then you are right... but then again.. the guys playing dont even get the trophy.... NOPE the OWNER gets it... Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant doesnt have NBA Trophy's in their trophy case... they have a ring... but anyone off the street can order that same ring from Balfor for a price...

there is a HUGE difference in finishing 2nd and 30th.....

ok really gotta run... been fun....

likley odds dont always come through. Im sure last year a ton of people would have called for CP3 and the hornets to go pretty far. Or calling for the nuggets to flop early. Anything is possible. The east is an easier road than the west.

For Hedo to take 10 mill or whatever it was was a decision upon him and his family. Who are we to say he is "Stupid" for doing so. As for his verbal agreement? A contract isnt a contract till its signed.

You need to go reread the posts....I never called Hedo stupid. That was a different poster. I think he's brilliant. Make your wife happy, everything else just doesn't matter. I said making $10 million for playing basketball doesn't mean he's smarter than anyone else. All it means is that he's good at basketball. Latrell Sprewell made a lot of money for his basketball skills at well.

Not true all the time. The Knicks will make more money than Portland eventho portland makes the playoffs.

Same with the Yankees and other teams like the cowboys. The big profits dont lie in playoff game revenues (Which is eaten up by the NBA anyways as they demand tv revenue rights and partial sponsorship). They make their money from marketing the team and its players which it owns the rights to.

Bad analogy....a 2nd place Knick team makes more than a 30th place Knick team.

There are too many what ifs in that scenario.

I bet you a 2nd place Knicks in 2010 without Lebron on the team makes way less then a 30th place knicks in 2010 with Lebron on it.!!

Wow.....ok...let's make it simple......if this year's Knick team made the playoffs and received revenue from said playoffs......they would have made more revenue than they did this year without making the playoffs.

Thats an obvious given. We are past that point. The orginal point in the thread was that making the playoffs for some teams doesnt affect their revenue as much as their marketing.

We obviously know that playing 10 extra games outside of the regular season will give you 10 more oppurtunites for concession sales as well as ticket sales. That we know. But if you like to compare that to a team that doesnt make the playoffs but still has marketable players and compare the revenues, by all means do so.

My point was and still is that placing 2nd or 3rd gets you now hardware at the end of they. Someone brought up the point that it brings in more revenues. That is true. But im sure teams dont depend on that revenue to make or break their franchise as much as they depend on the marketing of their team/players and concessions.

60 to 1. And im pretty sure no one bet that. The next year they were the favorites to win it and they didnt.

I wonder what the bet paid for the Pats coming in 2nd place and not winning for those who took them to win?? lol

I worked with 2 lifelong Giant fans who every year put $50 on them to win the Bowl. They were hungover for a week after they cashed those tickets

KNICKS in 2nd place? last time that happened was the 1994-95 season when they lost to Houston in the NBA FINALS ;) unless you just mean in the regular season... I'm sure they were tied for 1st or 2nd with SOMEONE at SOME time during the season.. like 1-0 lol
