Coming close to winning a title or making the playoffs and not winning a title is the exact same thing as not making the playoffs and not winning. Because in the NBA 2nd place gets you nothing. If you cant win that title then you sit with the rest of the league in the same place. There are no consolation prizes lol. its #1 or nothing. the 30th ranked team gets exactly what the 2nd place team gets. Thats nothing!!

Making the playoffs is not the same as not making the playoffs. Sport teams are a business. They are there to make money and stroke the ego of a rich owner. Making the playoff adds more ticket sales, fan interest and revenue. Making it farther in the playoffs means more money and revenue. Ask every owner and 100% would agree they rather be in 2nd place than 30th.....except maybe the Clippers or the Bucks.
