Crimson Tide cornerback Castille arrested on disorderly charge

August 19, 2007

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama star cornerback Simeon Castille was arrested early Sunday on a disorderly conduct charge.

Tuscaloosa police spokesman Capt. Greg Kosloff said Castille was arrested in an entertainment district near campus. He was taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail and released after posting bond. Police declined to release details of the incident.

Through team spokesman Jeff Purinton, coach Nick Saban said he didn't have all the facts of the case on Sunday and would deal with the situation "internally."

Castille was one of the top defensive backs in the Southeastern Conference last season. He led Alabama with five interceptions and three recovered fumbles.

Saban led his team through scrimmages Friday and Saturday before giving the team a day off Sunday. Alabama starts the season against Western Carolina on Sept. 1.

Castille is the fifth high-profile Crimson Tide athlete -- the fourth football player -- known to have been arrested in the past two months.

Brandon Deaderick, Brandon Fanney and Roy Upchurch were arrested for their role in a disturbance near campus on July 14. Fanney and Upchurch were charged with disorderly conduct and Deaderick was charged with criminal mischief, resisting arrest, and giving police a fake name.

Basketball player Yamene Coleman was arrested and charged with credit card fraud last month.

Heard about this first thing this morning:doh: However, as more details have come out, this has looked like a very minor incident. Sucks that it happened though, hate to see players getting in trouble with the law.

This is what the story is, as told by one of Castille's former high school coaches:

SC was out late with Antione Caldwell and others. They were on University Blvd when other players in a car came by began yell and joke with them. A policeman came to see what was going on. He interpreted that a fight was about break out, which not true. SC, trying to reconcile the situation, spoke up trying to explain the situation. Apparently, that is not what the police saw. SC told him who he was and for some reason the policeman told SC that Coach Saban was going have deal with this and arrested SC. SC was at the police station about 30 minutes to an hour. I am also told that the charges would be dropped. There was no drink, ***** or anything like that going on. SC should have said something right and walked away.

Of course, there is always another side of the story (which I'd really like to hear), but it does sound like Barney Fife is still alive and well;)

The police report came out today. You know what he got arrested for? Cussing in public. This was at 2 AM surrounded by a bunch of college students (not exactly a family affair) and he said a cuss word. Cop arrested him. Castille did not talk back to the cop and was cooperative, but pretty upset about it.

Oh, he also cried at the time of the arrest saying it would hurt his draft status:lollol:

But yeah, look out fellas....don't cuss in Tuscaloosa or Barney Fife will be out to get you
