While I just saw this today, I was saddened to see that Dr. Ted Savage passed away on the 12th at 85 years old. I spent a very memorable morning with Ted about 11 years ago at Cardinals Winter Warmup. I walked outside since it was extremely stuffy inside, and Ted was outside having a smoke, and 4 or 5 other people were talking to him. Those folks went their separate ways, and I stayed and talked to Ted. We then walked back inside, since he had to get upstairs for his signing time about 30 minutes later. We sat in the lobby and talked for the whole time, just about baseball, family, life, whatever came up. People recognized him and stopped over to say hello, ask him to sign things, which he graciously did. He then had an usher come up to him and let him know they were ready for him upstairs, and he couldnt find his reading glasses, which I helped him locate. He was wearing a suit jacket over his dress shirt and jeans, and emptied his pockets, handing me all the stuff he had in them, and finally, in the inside pocket of his suit jacket, were his glasses! He then thanked me, took his stuff back, and asked me if I wanted to take the VIP elevator upstairs with him, which I did, and we parted ways as he headed out to a round of applause at his signing time. An usher than walked me to a back staircase, and heading down, I passed Mark McGwire of all people, who was there that year. I did not get Mark to sign anything since he briefly made eye contact with me, and we shook hands just in passing, but he definitely didnt want to be bothered. It struck me how genuine and friendly Ted was, spending a ton of time with a guy he had just met, and giving me a memory I will always treasure! Rest in Peace Ted, you are a true gentleman.
