It’s been far too long since we’ve taken the time to highlight one of our members, so let’s talk @mcgwirenut!

Steve has been on SCC for just about 3 years now, but he’s no stranger to the hobby or it’s trading forums.

His collecting journey began in 1984 when the lure of “bubble gum in the packs” started it all. He collected from then until he taking a break while to serve in the Army. Unfortunately, his childhood collection was lost in a house fire sometime around 1993. Just like the rest of us though, that collecting itch never left him and he was inspired to get back into the game by the 1998 Sosa vs. McGwire Home Run Race.

Steve’s family initially thought that his spending on cards was a waste of money. When questioned by his father, a police officer, about it one day, he replied “better to be buying cards than *****.” That was the end of their disapproval. From personal experience, I can say that his wife is quite supportive of his current love of the hobby. Anyone who permits personal cases of each Heritage every year is an ally to the collector. In fact, Steve commented “I have the most wonderful wife who puts up with my expensive hobby and has helped me with stream lining my collection.”

Steve is strictly a baseball card guy. As mentioned about, he has a passion for the Heritage sets, opening cases every year and putting together the base, chrome numbered parallel sets, purple chrome, and any other of the insert sets that catch his eye from each year’s release. He’s not exclusive to Heritage though, you’ll find his name on any number of break lists each week as he chases the hot new rookies or a big case hit.

Most of you could probably guess, but when asked about some of the favorite cards in his collection, he highlighted his guy Jazz Chisholm Jr.:

When speaking about the hobby in general, Steve said that his favorite part of the hobby is “being able to meet new people and helping each other out with player(s) or sets they are working on.” On the opposite side of the coin, quite literally, he mentioned the cost of cards in general as being the biggest downside. Not as a complaint like you mostly see out there these days, but just that “it has gotten so much more expensive from when I first started collecting.” Definitely a sentiment I think most of us can relate to these days.

Steve doesn’t really collect anything outside of cards in the sports world and when he’s not sorting out cases or working, you can find him out hunting.

If you’d like to help Steve out in finishing one of his hardest sets, keep an eye out for 2008 Goudey GU Memorabilia Delmon Young. It’s the last one he needs to complete this tough GU set. I can tell you from experience it isn’t easy to find, I couldn’t even get a pic of it online to include here.

Having been a personal recipient of Steve’s generosity, and I know I’m not alone here, I’d like to extend a thank you from SCC for all the good you do in our little community!
