Phelon JonesLSU cornerback Phelon Jones said Monday that he is transferring to Alabama.
Jones (6-0, 190) started two games last year and played extensively in the Tigers' nickel package, but said he wanted to transfer somewhere in-state where he'd get more playing time. He will sit out the 2009 season, with two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2010.
"I just wanted to go somewhere in-state really, and Alabama was the best fit," Jones said. "They're going to have five of their top eight guys leaving next year. Everything's good at LSU; it just wasn't the right fit. I wasn't going to get as much (playing time) as I wanted."
Jones' father, Tony, said LSU coach Les Miles gave Jones his release last Thursday and Jones met with Alabama coach Nick Saban on Monday, finalizing the decision.
Jones was the third-rated prospect in the state in the Press-Register's 2007 Elite 18 list of in-state prospects, and was the 10th-rated cornerback in the country that year according to Rivals.com.
