Football Free Agency Day 1 Signings

HiEnd

Bench Warmer
A whole lotta action once that clock struck midnight

The National Football Post reports that inside linebacker Bart Scott has agreed to terms with the Jets on a multi-year contract.

Adam Schefter says the deal is expected to be signed later Friday for roughly $8 million a year. Scott, like new teammate Calvin Pace, is highly versatile and intelligent. The Jets have the makings of a great linebacker group, and Rex Ryan will know how to maximize Scott's talent after coaching him for years in Baltimore. This signing makes a lot more sense for New York than getting the downside of Ray Lewis' career. Baltimore has to be deeply disappointed, but they seem likely to increase their efforts to sign Lewis now. Feb. 27 - 9:24 am et

Patriots agreed to terms with RB Fred Taylor on an undisclosed contract.

Bill Belichick likes hungry veterans who are desperate for a championship. Taylor is not that useful on third downs or short-yardage, but he's a threat to steal early down carries from Laurence Maroney and company. With that said, Taylor won't be guaranteed any role and the Patriots will be careful with his carries. As part of a committee, he's unlikely to be a consistent fantasy option. Feb. 27 - 8:10 am et

Redskins agreed to terms with Albert Haynesworth on a seven-year, $100 million contract. The deal includes $41 million guaranteed and could reach $115 million.

The $41 million is guaranteed in the first three years, which could make it relatively easy to revisit the contract then. We'll see how he reacts to all the money, but Redskins coordinator Greg Blache usually gets the most from his linemen and Haynesworth is the best free agent available in a decade. In a market full of mediocre players, he's worth it. Life just got far easier for Jason Taylor and far worse for NFC East opposing centers. A presser is scheduled for 5PM. Feb. 27 - 7:58 am et

Redskins agreed to terms with CB DeAngelo Hall on a six-year contract with a $55 million max value. The deal includes $23 million guaranteed.

Our first post-free agency period signing is a doozy. Hall has had an up and down career, but his on-field ability cannot be questioned. The 25-year-old has the ball skills, speed, and man-to-man cover ability to be top-ten cornerback. For the second straight offseason he's getting paid like it. Only time will tell if Hall busts as badly in D.C. as he did in Oakland. The Skins will now either cut Shawn Springs or put Carlos Rogers on the trade market. Feb. 27 - 12:27 am et

Will update as more happens

Patriots agreed to terms with TE Chris Baker on an undisclosed contract.

Not exactly revenge for Spygate, but good to see the Jets-Patriots pipeline still working. Baker's career high in catches is only 41, but he can play all three downs competently and block well enough. New England was often short-handed at tight end last year with Ben Watson inconsistent and poor depth behind him. Neither is likely to be a useful fantasy option

The Eagles have reportedly signed former Bengals OT Stacy Andrews.

The story was originally broken by Profootballtalk.com, but they appear to be having server issues. Andrews figures to get over $5 million annually. He'll likely start at right tackle, allowing his brother Shawn to stay inside.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Ravens signed CB Dominique Foxworth on a four-year, $28 million contract.

Foxworth, virtually given away by the Broncos a few months ago, receives a whopping $16.5 million guaranteed as one of the top corners available. Foxworth will start opposite Fabian Washington as the Ravens move from a veteran-laden corner duo to a tandem squarely in their prime

Steelers agreed to terms with OG Chris Kemoeatu on a five-year, $20 million contract.

The Jets weren't offering much more money, so Kemoeatu decided to settle for the offer already on the table from the Steelers. Following the release of Kendall Simmons, the Steelers are set to enter 2009 with Keoeatu and Darnell Stapleton as the starting guards.

Not so fast on Scott:

Bart Scott reportedly is going to give the Ravens a chance to match the Jets' five-year, $40 million contract offer.

In an effort to break the story, many national sources said the deal was officially agreed to. But it was never signed and it now appears Scott is having second thoughts and wants to give Baltimore another shot. We don't see why Baltimore wouldn't match now, but it's no lock. We'll find out shortly.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that Kerry Collins has agree to terms with the Titans on a two-year, $15 million contract with $8.5 million guaranteed.

Considering that he was summarily benched for Vince Young three years ago and was a league average quarterback in 2008, Collins did well for himself as a 36-year-old free agent. The Titans are paying a premium to bank on the veteran's stability for two years while waiting for the light to flip on for Young. Feb. 27 - 4:03 pm et

ESPN.com's Bill Williamson reports the Broncos have agreed to terms with RBs Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington on four-year contracts.

Barring another signing or draft pick, the Broncos will likely use a committee with Buckhalter on early downs, Hillis in short-yardage, and Arrington in passing situations. Buckhalter, 30, has a long injury history and has never shown the capability of holding up to a heavy workload, so don't expect more than 10-12 touches weekly. Feb. 27 - 4:36 pm et

The San Francisco Chronicle cites "a league source" reporting that Brian Dawkins has agreed to a two-year contract with the Broncos.

Philly was considered a near lock to retain Dawkins on a one-year deal, but he's set to quarterback the Broncos defense in a Rodney Harrison-type role. Dawkins showed last season that he has plenty left in tank and will help the Broncos defense get back to respectability while in rebuilding mode.

Broncos signed S Renaldo Hill to a four-year, $10 million contract.

It's identical to Jabar Gaffney's deal. If the Brian Dawkins report is true, the Broncos now have two veteran starters at safety as they rebuild their defense on the fly. Hill will play center field while Dawkins plays up against the run.

Bart Scott-LB-Ravens Feb. 27 - 5:37 pm et

Bart Scott has reportedly agreed to join the Jets after they upped their offer to him to a 6-year, $48 million contract.

Jabar Gaffney-WR-Broncos Feb. 27 - 5:36 pm et

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Broncos have signed Jabar Gaffeny to a four-year, $10 million contract.

Gaffney is little more than a No. 4 receiver, but he is familiar with Josh McDaniels' system that often goes four wide. Gaffney figures to work the out routes while Eddie Royal and Brandon Stokley fill the Wes Welker slot role and Brandon Marshall mirrors Randy Moss.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Lions have agreed to terms with RB Maurice Maurice on a three-year deal worth close to $7 million.

The Lions also showed interest in Derrick Ward, so it's clear that they wanted a backfield partner for Kevin Smith. Smith is likely to hold onto early down carries with Morris being used as a change of pace back similar to his role with Seattle over the years
