Fenway Park likely will host the Winter Classic on Jan. 1.

New York and Philadelphia were in the running to host the third annual outdoor game, but Boston is expected to win out, sources familiar with negotiations between Red Sox officials and the NHL confirmed to ESPN.com on Thursday.

There had been concerns that offseason construction at the ballpark would prevent the game from being held there, one source said, and details aren't yet final, but it appears that any issues have been addressed.

The Bruins' opponent is unknown but likely would be an Original Six rival such as the Montreal Canadiens.

In previous years, the outdoor game has been played at Ralph Wilson Stadium, the home of the Buffalo Bills, and the Chicago Cubs' Wrigley Field.
