The Chicago Blackhawks recalled winger Bryan Bickell from AHL Rockford, and he will travel to Denver for Friday night's game against the Avalanche.

This means there is a new injury, or the Blackhawks were not satisfied with the play of the 12 forwards Thursday night in the 3-1 loss to Phoenix. It also means either Jonathan Toews or Ben Eager won't play Friday night.

Technically, the Blackhawks played with 11 forwards Thursday, as defenseman Jordan Hendry suited up as a winger on the fourth line. If there are no new injuries and Eager and Toews are not ready to play, Bickell more than likely will take Hendry's spot.

If that's the case, the team appears to be showing a sense of urgency. The Blackhawks might not need Bickell after Friday because Toews and Eager should be ready for Monday's game against the Kings in the start of a four-game home stand.

Bickell, 23, has appeared in one game with the Blackhawks this season, posting five hits in 6 minutes, 46 seconds of action during Chicago's 3-2 loss to the Red Wings on Oct. 8 in Detroit. He also recorded four penalty minutes in three preseason games with the Blackhawks in North America before dishing out an assist in the team's 9-2 exhibition win over HC Davos in Zurich, Switzerland, on Sept. 28.

Overall, Bickell has two goals in eight career regular-season games with the Blackhawks in parts of three seasons.
