What's all this stuff about Advanced Stats?

I'm seeing this mentioned in the news every day this week.

Here's an example:

What's that stuff all about? Just adding another line or two of stats on the cards? I don't get why it's newsworthy.

Look at the back of any baseball, football, basketball, etc. card.... ever wonder "who reads this stuff?"

I do! But, then again the only things I look at are at bats, hits, home runs, rbi and batting average or wins, losses, saves innings pitched strike outs and era for pitchers. Do I really need any stats beyond that?

Shoe size... favorite color... last book read, last movie watched, etc.

lol, I guess THAT is what they mean by advanced stats.

I think ever since the "Money Ball" Oakland Athletics...some of the more obscure baseball metrics have become a bit more mainstream. Due to that, the trickle-down of these stats to cards doesn't really surprise me.

But, card stats have been an ever changing thing too. Here is an early example. These old cards made a big deal out of fielding stats.
