Twofold Strength

Let’s say for example your team is 5-0. If we look at the strength of schedule (SOS) for your team, your opponents are 20-5, only losing to you. That gives you an excellent SOS; however you don’t know the SOS of the five teams you played that went 20-5. Those 20 wins could have all come from teams that are 0-5. Doesn’t seem like a tough SOS now does it?

I created a complex Excel sheet formula that will calculate your team’s SOS, and your team’s opponent’s SOS.

Scoring (out of 1 point)
.50 Team’s Winning %
.25 Team’s SOS Average
.25 Team’s Opponent’s SOS Average

Winning is most important here, as it accounts for 50% of your team’s score. And when you win, your team’s opponent’s SOS also goes up (because your team’s opponent’s SOS includes your record as well). Losing does hurt, however you still pick up a few points from your team’s SOS because the teams you play are winning games.

Playing a I-AA school is a minor penalty. You still get winning % if you beat them, however you will get a 0 for their SOS. That 0 is calculated into the average SOS and will hurt you big in the beginning, however later in the season when that 0 is calculated with 9-10 other games, it will not be much of a penalty.

As the season goes on, the score will become a more accurate representation of your team’s strength.

Basically, if you beat bad teams your score will not improve much. For your teams score to increase, you need to beat good teams, and the teams you beat also need to beat good teams.

*I must caution you!* This early in the season, some teams have only played one game so far, so it will effect the score tremendously. I expect a much better picture after week 3 and it will only get better after that. This IS NOT a ranking system, but a measure of strength based on the quality of wins.

I have listed the first 50 teams because there were so many ties, I will probably list fewer next week.
