So much for ballyhooed Dallas Cowboys rookie Dez Bryant(notes) making his debut Thursday night against the Miami Dolphins.

According to the team’s Web site, Bryant will not play in the game if the team’s regular starters do not, and it sounds like that’s not going to happen.

Owner Jerry Jones, prior to the club’s kickoff luncheon, broke the news a day after coach Wade Phillips said that most starters, including quarterback Tony Romo(notes), will sit.

Jones added that the team doesn’t want to take “additional risks” with Bryant’s healed ankle this close to the beginning of the regular season. The fact that Bryant will miss the entire preseason and most of training camp should scale back some of the expectations for him this season, but he still should have a productive season and it wouldn’t surprise us one bit if he overtook Roy Williams before too long.
