Have you ever mistakenly bought a counterfeit sports card?

I haven't. At least not that I know of. Not that I buy many cards anyway. I was just curious if anyone got scammed like that, of if you know of anyone who did. Every now and then I hear someone say there are more and more counterfeits out there, but haven't seen it first hand.

To my knowledge, I never have. But, these days I'm being a lot more careful. This is especially true when it comes to big dollar cards. For instance, I am already planning for the day when I buy my 1952 Topps Mantle (a day still pretty far in the future)...but I am already studying the card and can pretty much ID and authentic one verses a counterfeit based on the diagnostics.

I would suggest anyone looking to pickup a higher dollar card to study the piece first and learn it's characteristics. Even if buying a graded example, one can never be too careful.

Here is a great breakdown of the well known characteristics of the 1952 Mantle if anyone is interested. This site also contains great info on well known fakes. This may be the most counterfeited card in existence.

Not a card, but before I got really good (educated) about ID'ing Henderson autos, I bought/got scammed on TWO of his (ahem) autographs.

I was at a card show a couple years back and one of the vendors (who has not done anymore shows in the Jackson-area) sold a Michael Jordon Rookie Card... that ended up being fake. The buyer took it to one of the other vendors who was buying MJ Rookie Cards. The vendor explained to him that it was fake and took him to a website that showed a real and fake MJ Rookie Card side-by-side.

The buyer returned to the vendor that sold him the card and asked for his money back... was told NO!... then demanded his money back... again he was told NO!... then he had the police get involved... and the vendor reluctantly gave the buyer his money back... screamed at just about everyone in the building... and was stupid enough to talk about one of the police officer's mother, before being escorted from the building in handcuffs.

So... long story short... I have NEVER purchased a FAKE card, but have seen what happens when you sell one!
