NFL commissioner Roger Goodell conducted a pair of unannounced "town hall" meetings with players on the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers during a West Coast trip this past week.

Goodell gave players an open forum to discuss their concerns and ask questions. He met with the 49ers on Wednesday and the Chargers on Thursday.

A league spokesman said a consensus of players expressed a dislike of a four-game preseason and added concerns about the demands of the offseason.

The commissioner will continue the format in December after naming Tony Dungy chairman of a new players advisory forum that will conduct sessions with the Ravens, Redskins, Eagles, Giants and Jets.

Goodell will encourage players to air their opinions and complaints on a wide range of topics related to the game, as well as the personal conduct policy and the demands of the offseason.

Goodell elaborated to players about the role of John Madden as a special advisor as the league studies a variety of issues, including how offseason programs and training camp practices are conducted.

The information gathered by the league could result in recommendations if the NFL and the NFL Players Association agree to an 18-game regular season, which would trim the preseason to two games.

Goodell has extended an invitation to NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith to participate in the forums.
