Baseball First pack story, what was your first great pull?

Bench Warmer
When I started collecting my first pack was 1989 upper deck. It was just after the Braves made it to the world series in 1991 during their worst to first year. So when I got 4 packs I was hoping to pull a smoltz rookie being he was my favorite brave at the time. When I played little league I was a pitcher and I emulated him. My best pull was a Ken Griffey Jr rc and at the time he was a hot rookie so i was glad to get it but I really wanted the Smoltz so I traded some of my other cards for it and left. I saved it till when PSA started and I decided to sent it in to be graded not really keen on sending it but I did. It came back a PSA 10 and I sold it about 2 months later for $2,050 to a guy at a card show. With that money and my refund check I bought my 1st car.

Thats my story, whats yours? Please share it with us.

My best pull was a few months ago from Wal-Mart. I bought a $9.99 8-pack random blaster because it had a 2004 SPx pack showing. All the other packs were 80's junk, but the Spx had a Nolan Ryan GU/Auto #/799, BV $120. I traded it for some extremely nice PC Miguel Cabrera's. :D

Bill Mazeroski

My best pulls have always come from retail packs, believe it or not. I bought a $19.99, blaster box of 8 packs, 2008 Topps Heritage. First pack i pulled an on-card auto/Forbes field seat relic, hand numbered 21/25 Bill Mazeroski Card. i almost fell out of my chair. its value, as far as i can determine thus far, is selling for around 250-350 dollars.

my second best came out of the same blaster box. Joba Chamberlin on-card auto.

My best pull happened back in 2001 with a couple of boxes of 01 Leaf RC & Stars baseball. First box was a dud, nothing great at all. Then the first pack of box #2 had this:

The Great American Treasures Nolan Ryan had a reported print run of 25 made. The cool part is the piece of the ball on the front has some ink on it from the signature of one of the umpires (Drew Coble) who worked Ryan's 7th No-Hitter game. The back of the card clearly shows where the signature was located on the ball. Best pull for me ever.

This is the way game used cards should be.

My first great pull was actually basketball. I bought a box of 94/95 classic collect-a-card basketball for $15 and pulled a redemption for a gold kevin garnett rc that was worth at the time $350. Redeemed it and sold it for about $200. it was like a 1/10000 pack pull.

1986 Fleer Basketball

I bought a box in late 1987 for $7.00 and a 1984 Topps Don Mattingly.

I sold the whole box in 1992 for $1200, and used the cash for my wife (then girlfriend's) prom, 6 months of auto insurance, and a speaker box for my 15' Earthquakes.

Looking back, I wish I hadn't done it, but at the time, I thought it was awesome.

My first 2 modern era GU/Auto pulls came on same day. I was at the gas station. Had 6 bucks in my pocket. Debated on cigs or cards. Bought a pack of baseball, and basketball. In the first pack basketball I pulled a dual Kobe, Jordan piece of floor. I was happy. Figured thats it. Then in the baseball a 1987 Topps buyback on card auto of Strawberry. It was awesome. But sucked me into thinking retail was loaded.

I was given lots of wax as a kid..but..there really weren't stellar pulls from 1993 Topps (other than the three russians card). It took me until 2000 to pull my first biggie. I bought..man...over 12 boxes of 2000 Topps over the course of the summer...one day, this came from a pack:

Later in the summer, I bought the remaining packs of Legends of NY (and the bonus pack) and got a Winfield GU and this puppy
