Hey friends,

Today, June 9th, 2023 is the 50th anniversary of Ron Turcotte riding Secretariat to win the 1973 Belmont Stakes, winning by a world record 31 lengths! This was, and probably still is, the most unforgettable moment in horse racing's long history, and to commemorate that, I want to hold a contest today, giving away a signed photo from Ron!



Chick Anderson, the famous racing announcer, called the race, and estimated that Secretariat took it by 25 lengths (still a record) but the official measurement was 31 lengths (absolutely unheard of!) Ronnie was a great jockey, but he always gave Secretariat the credit, that horse had afterburners like none other, he accelerated and got even faster the more he ran!

So, in honor of the 31 lengths, pick a number between 1 and 31! One guess per member per day for the length of the contest, stop by and have some fun!

Crazy that was 50 years ago... I was not alive for it, but my grandfather before he passed told me some stories about how dominant this horse was. He had a picture of it from the Washington Post that he saved next to his pool table in the basement and framed it up.

This was by far the most dominant horse of any era.

@zlw1 that is an AWESOME story, what a fun memory from your Grandfather! He must have been a real sports enthusiast, and how cool that he framed the article and photo near his pool table, I had a ton of fun memories in my own Grandparents' basement, also with a pool table! Amazing how sports really allow us to span the generations, it is fascinating to hear from those who come before us!!

I fancied myself a junior horse handicapper back in the day.
I made my own Beyer's speed ratings for my local track Canterbury Park and went to the track all summer my senior year in HS. Best time of my life. In honor of that year 1987, I will guess the sum of that year- 25.

What a fascinating story! Canterbury Park, in Minnesota, I assume? My local track from my high school days is no longer there, it was Maywood Park outside of Chicago. Going to the tracks was helpful to teach me how to wager, how to play a long shot, and also how to pick a winner! One of my favorite memories from the track was in 2019 when my wife and I were at Churchill Downs for the races just before the Kentucky Derby. She asked about placing a bet, and I picked some great horses that night! She never knew I had spent time at the tracks earlier in my life, so it was fun to see her reaction!
