Cleveland Browns veteran linebacker Eric Barton's season is in jeopardy after he was diagnosed with a neck injury following Sunday's game.

Barton was informed by a spine specialist at The Cleveland Clinic that he had a bulging disc between the C3 and C4 vertebrae, the source told Mortensen.

When Barton left Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears late in the second quarter, it was reported as a right shoulder injury.

Barton was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Browns in March. He spent the previous six years with the Jets after beginning his career with the Raiders in 1999.

Meanwhile, in their first move after general manager George Kokinis's ouster, the Browns released kicker Billy Cundiff on Tuesday. The move indicates that kicker Phil Dawson, who was active Sunday, is fully recovered from a calf injury. Dawson had his extra point blocked in the Browns' 30-6 loss to the Bears.

Without Kokinis, Browns vice president of football administration Dawn Aponte made the call to Cundiff to inform him that he was being released, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The Browns also announced Tuesday that they had released defensive back Anthony Madison.
