So it seemed a quiet vote, but Fred McGriff was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame yesterday by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee!

The other players on the ballot were:
Curt Schilling, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Rafael Palmeiro, Albert Belle, Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy.

Super awesome I always loved the Crime Dog Fred McGriff!

Personally I am saying nobody!!

Agree with you!
I see that Scott Rolen has the highest percent of votes, though I would put him as a very good player, I don't include him in the same line of thought with the all time greats who are in Cooperstown. When I travelled there with my 2 best friends, we joked a few times about how the Hall has definitely evolved.....including players such as Alan Trammell, Jack Morris, Harold Baines among others. No offense to them, they played for a long time and well, but I would never include any of them in the same conversation with Ruth, Mantle, Gehrig, Musial, Koufax, etc.

We talked about greats of the era vs. greats of all time, though if we are talking greats of the era, I think Donnie Baseball should be in!! Granted, there are those greats of all time who we are still talking about 75 years later (ie The Babe!), though there have been many great players since then, I think that some of the players coming in the next 5 years (specifically Albert and Yadier, most likely!) would stack up among the greats of all time.

We also had the PED conversation while we were there, it comes as no surprise to me even now that Bonds, McGwire, Clemens, Sosa, et al are not included, nor do I think they will be, at least not anytime soon. That will always be a controversy, though some of the greats of this era have dabbled (Tatis and his recent suspension).

I think the best baseball player listed here is Carlos Beltran (well, not counting A-Rod and his PED usage). Beltran’s association with the sign stealing scandal has doomed him. He is not even going to get the 5% needed to stay on the ballot.

@Criollos

I had not thought of that Luis, you are exactly right though. Beltran was a Cardinal and played well for us down the stretch, and I really think his numbers could make a good case for him. That sign stealing scandal really hurt him though. ARod will join Bonds, McGwire, Clemens, Sosa, et al.....and why does no one ever mention Canseco in that group, I mean he was the best player in baseball for some time in the 80s.....WS winner, etc.

It is nice that the writers who vote have some standards for conduct it appears, odd that Piazza and Pudge were voted in though both were known for PED use as well.

Cheers!

Kevin

Question for the Club: most deserving of the Hall who has not made it in yet? Would be fun to see who your favorites are!

Mine, and regardless of what anyone thinks of him, Pete Rose. Not a great role model, but an awesome ballplayer!

He was Charlie Hustle, wasn't he?

I mean, this is one of the most iconic baseball photos EVER!

I also loved Donnie Baseball, who put together some absolutely amazing seasons, arguably the best player in baseball in the late 89s and early 90s.....and if not the best, definitely up there, along with Ryne Sandberg, Tony Gwynn, Cal Ripken, Jr., Andre Dawson, Wade Boggs, et. al.

His case is made less strong with his injuries and lack of a World Series win, though I really did hope Mattingly would get in this year.
