Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis, who missed the first half of the season because of injuries suffered in a mo-ped accident, finds the end of his season truncated, as well.
An MRI exam showed Ellis has a bone bruise and inflammation on his left ankle, and on Friday he was officially ruled out for the remainder of the season. He has been told to stay off the foot for the next two weeks.
Golden State officials emphasized that the injury, while on the same foot that had to be surgically repaired following his mo-ped crash in August, is on the opposite side of the ankle.
The crash resulted in a severely sprained ligament and a torn deltoid ligament, but Ellis had been showing a return to form -- the kind the Warriors were expecting to have for a full season when they signed him to a six-year, $66 million contract extension just before the accident.
Ellis averaged 19 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 25 games.
"He's gotten himself back to where he's got to be the same player that we had before, and that's the most important thing," coach Don Nelson said Friday. "As far as the other decisions go, I know more today than I did before. And I'll keep it to myself, thank you very much."
According to area reports, guard Jamal Crawford, who is being held out until at least Monday because of lower back pain, likely is done playing for the Warriors. Nelson has been displeased with a starting backcourt of Ellis and Crawford, calling the pairing "oil and water," according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Nelson intends to have Ellis as his point guard next season, with Stephen Jackson as the shooting guard.
