Troubled Cavaliers guard Delonte West did not join his teammates for an intrasquad scrimmage, the public's first chance to see superstars LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal on the floor together as Cleveland teammates.

West, who skipped the team's first four practices of training camp without permission, stayed back at the Cavs' training facility and worked out as the team held a scrimmage in front of 5,000 fans, some of whom began lining up at 8 a.m. to get inside.

West has battled bipolar disorder and was recently arrested on gun possession charges in Maryland. A team spokesman said general manager Danny Ferry made the decision for West to sit out the scrimmage.

Ferry has not addressed West's situation since media day on Monday.

At the scrimmage, James and O'Neal were opponents one last time.

The NBA superstars were on opposing teams at the Cavaliers' annual Wine and Gold scrimmage at the University of Akron's Rhodes Arena, a gym where James played many of his high school games.

O'Neal, acquired in an offseason trade, played for the Gold while James led the Wine.

O'Neal was unofficially 6 of 7 from the field, dropping at least four short jumpers and one layup when he got behind the defense. The 7-foot-1 big man is settling into his new home, but he's still learning about some of his new teammates.

When he checked in at the scorer's table in the second quarter, O'Neal wasn't sure whom he was replacing.
