I'd never been to a training camp before, so we loaded up the kiddies at 5:00am and headed over to Terre Haute, IN to catch the Colts training camp. Thought we would be about 40 minutes early and maybe snag a few auto's for the girls before practice started, unfortunately I forgot that Indiana is now in the Eastern time zone, so we ended up missing the first 20 or so minutes of the practice.
What blew me away was that there really weren't that many people attending the practice. I also couldn't believe how close you are to the field and the players when they stand on the sidelines. We sat 15 feet from Peyton and the rest of the offense when they would come off the field to let the 2nd and 3rd string play.
Those who have been to other training camps, is this common to be 15-20 feet from the field?
Being an U. of Iowa grad. I really was happy to see and chat with Dallas Clark(former hawkeye). I asked him where Bob Sanders(another Hawkeye alum) was, and he told me he hasn't put the pads on yet during camp, he is still recovering from off-season shoulder surgery. Sanders later emerged from the weight room, and the man is
built like a tank for being only 5'8".
I put my 2 year old son in a Hawkeye jersey, hoping that I might get a pic of him with Clark or Sanders. About 5 minutes before Clark came over to chat with us, my boy was pretty much done being in one spot(2 hours in one spot for a 2 yr. old boy is asking a lot) so my wife took him and the *#@?!! camera with her on a walk. So no pics of him with Dallas Clark, but he did sign both girls Colts jersey's.
We did manage to get a few nice shots of the practice:
17 Hunter Smith (P), 65 Ryan Lilja (OG), 44 Dallas Clark (TE) kneeling, some ball boy(how does one get that job!), 18 Peyton Manning (QB I think), 71 Ryan Diem (OT), 4 Adam Vinatieri (K) that guy did nothing but socialize and make small talk with the other kicker trying to make the team, ya like that will happen.
Manning and Clark hustling in for the next play
Classic shot of Manning dropping back. Even looks perfect in practice.
Couple of no-name WR's trying to make the team.
Manning talking with rookie (11)WR Anthony Gonzalez. Gonzalez played with the first team, basically lining up where Stokely would have been. Gonzalez did look confused a lot when Peyton would start his count under center.
