Basketball Rubio's choices affected by draft slide

Spanish star Ricky Rubio's move to the NBA has been complicated by his sliding to fifth in the draft, but the only options he's currently considering are playing in Minnesota or returning to DKV Joventut, sources said on Tuesday.

Had Rubio been a top three pick, he could have more easily afforded to pay Joventut to release him, a source said. But the difference in salary between third and fifth in the draft is roughly $600,000 a year. Joventut reportedly is asking for no less than $4 million for his release.

Going to another European team is not a realistic option because that team would want a long-term commitment from Rubio and his desire remains to play in the NBA, a source said. Whether he can do that next season or when his Joventut contract expires two years from now is the question.

In any case, Rubio apparently has no objections to playing in Minnesota.

"This isn't about Minnesota," a source said. "It's about the buyout."

Although the Wolves drafted another point guard in Syracuse's Jonny Flynn on June 25, a source said Minnesota is dedicated to having Rubio on the team next season.

its not the economy....i think its because an nba team can only pay $200,000 on a buyout from a european team....i think thats the amount but i know an nba team cant pay for all the buyout

I think he is. Just like in hockey, it seems like the finesse type players come out of europe while the north American players are more tough nitty gritty. Same with basketball. The game in Europe is finesse, outside shots, smooth and easy layups. The game here is tough, body pounding the paint with hussle and mix ups. A good refined game from the Euro would take some time getting used to for american players hence the advantage rubio would havee.

Rubio would not have an advantage. He'd be just another on the list of soft Euros that are half the player they are overseas when they come to the NBA.

The can only pay $500,000. That is the official rule. The rest has to be paid by the player. This was known well before he was drafted.

There are some decent euro players as well as past players.

I was a big fan of Vlady. Dirk certainly isnt a flop. Bargnani is coming around. Tony parker is decent.

He hasnt played a game here so I dont know. I called Oden the bust of the century before he played a game so i fall into the same boat of predicting prior to them playing!!

Oden is far from a bust. The guy came off an injury, played only 20 minutes a game and got 9 points a game and 7 rebounds. He played 1/2 the game basically, and just after an injury. Not very many players are scoring 9 points and getting 7 rebounds in just 20 minutes. If he was playing as much as Dwight Howard, his Points and Rebounds would be almost the same. And he is considered one of the best in the league. He will get his time up this year, and barring another freak issue will be one of the better big men in the league. So I am not sure how you get a bust from someone that produces a good amount of points and rebounds for the time he is on the court.
