The second day of the NHL draft started off with another big trade Saturday, as the Calgary Flames acquired highly coveted defenseman Jay Bouwmeester from the Florida Panthers.
In exchange, the Flames send defenseman Jordan Leopold and a third-round pick (No. 67) in this year's draft.
Both Bouwmeester and Leopold are slated to become unrestricted free agents on July 1, giving the teams four days of exclusive negotiating rights.
The Flames will make a strong push to sign Bouwmeester, as it's believed the native of the Edmonton area wanted to return to western Canada.
Bouwmeester, 25, has spent his entire career with Florida, which drafted him third overall in 2002. He had 15 goals and 27 assists last season.
Leopold, 28, played three seasons with the Flames before getting traded to the Colorado Avalanche in 2006. He rejoined the Flames when the Avalanche traded him March 4.
