The NBA is warning teams not to tamper with Hornets point guard Chris Paul(notes), who reportedly wants to be traded.

ESPN.com reports the league sent out a memo which says, in part, that "no team should be having communications with Chris Paul or his agent or representative about a potential trade for Paul that have not been authorized in advance by the New Orleans Hornets."

Possible penalties include "suspension of the offending person, prohibition of the offending team from hiring the person being tampered with, forfeiture of draft picks and individual and/or team fines of up to $5 million," according to the memo

Paul is signed through 2012 but reportedly is upset that the Hornets aren’t doing enough to be a contender. CBSSports.com and ESPN.com have reported that Paul’s reps have told the team he wants to be dealt. The Magic, Knicks, Lakers, Trail Blazers, Mavericks and Bobcats have been mentioned as possible destinations.

Paul tried to downplay the trade talk Monday after meeting with coach Monty Williams, GM Dell Demps and other team officials.
