Bench Warmer
Mets manager Jerry Manuel has been suspended for one game for arguing and making contact with an umpire, Major League Baseball announced Saturday morning.
Manuel, who also was fined an undisclosed amount, served his suspension Saturday afternoon, when the Mets played the Pittsburgh Pirates at CitiField.
Bench coach Sandy Alomar Sr. managed in Manuel's place.
Manuel's actions in Thursday night's 7-5 win against the Philadelphia Phillies prompted the suspension. He was infuriated with first-base umpire Bill Welke all game, and came out to argue three times with Welke -- twice over calls that appeared as though they should have gone the Mets' way.
Manuel finally was ejected by Welke in the eighth following an obstruction call on shortstop Jose Reyes that let Shane Victorino slip out of a rundown. Welke said Manuel "brushed" his hat with the bill of his own cap as he screamed in the umpire's face
