Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Ronald Jerome "Popeye" Jones was arrested Sunday night in Richardson, Texas and charged with driving while intoxicated.
Jones, 39, whose playing career included two stints with the Mavericks, suffered facial abrasions when arresting officers took him to the ground, according to Richardson Police Department public information officer Jonathan Wakefield.
Wakefield said police received calls from citizens at about 9:30 p.m. reporting that someone was erratically driving a gray GMC Yukon. Police stopped Jones in the 100 block of South Greenville Avenue and determined that he was driving while intoxicated, although Jones declined to take a breathalyzer test.
The 6-foot-8 Jones, who is free on bond, did not comply with officers' demands to place his hands behind his back when he was taken into custody, according to Wakefield.
"They were forced to take him to the ground where they could better control him," Wakefield said. "When they did that, that's when he sustained injuries to his face."
Jones was treated at the scene and was not charged with resisting arrest, according to Wakefield.
Jones, a player development coach, did not attend the Mavericks' practice Monday. Head coach Rick Carlisle declined to comment about Jones' arrest.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban declined to comment on "personnel matters."
