Basketball Ex-Grizzlies guard Burks shot during robbery

Former Memphis Grizzlies and University of Memphis point guard Antonio Burks remains in critical condition a day after being shot during a robbery.

A spokeswoman for Regional Medical Center in Memphis said Tuesday morning there was no change in the medical condition of Burks, who underwent surgery Monday night after he was shot in the stomach.

Police said the 29-year-old was returned to the operating room about 10 p.m. Monday because of internal bleeding.

A police news release said Burks and four other men were in the backyard of a Memphis house when they were robbed by three men.

According to the Commercial Appeal, Burks was watching a dice game at the house when the robbery took place.

Another man, 44-year-old Vincent Williams, also was shot in the stomach. Police said Williams also was in critical condition.

Burks played two seasons for the Grizzlies, appearing in 81 games and averaging 2.3 points and 1.3 assists. His last NBA season was 2005-06 with Memphis.

According to the Commercial Appeal, Burks played professionally in Bulgaria and Poland during the 2008-09 season.
 
Wow thats crazy, Antonio Burks played for our local semi-professional team the Vermont Frostheaves and Ive met him several times, he is very nice and a social person. This is terrible to hear, I hope he recovers and survives.
 
Teen arrested in shooting of ex-Grizzlie Burks

Police say a 16-year-old boy has been charged in the shooting of former NBA and University of Memphis player Antonio Burks.

Memphis police said Monday the teen is charged with accessory after the fact in the June 20 shooting.

Deputy Chief Joe Scott said in a news release that "closure in the case is at hand." The arrest was the first in the case.

The 29-year-old Burks was shot between his abdomen and upper leg in the backyard of a vacant house during a robbery by three men. He has been upgraded from critical to serious condition at the Regional Medical Center.

Burks was a reserve for the Memphis Grizzlies for two seasons. In 2003-2004 he was Conference USA Player of the Year, capping his career with the University of Memphis.
