Rookie running back Beanie Wells has a sprained ankle that could sideline him for the short term, Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt told the team's Web site Sunday.

"His MRI revealed a right ankle sprain, but at this point it doesn't appear serious, which is obviously good news," Whisenhunt said. "In terms of missing time, it's tough to say now, but we should have a better idea in the coming days."

Wells, the 31st player chosen in the draft, was participating in training camp practice for the first time when teammates "rolled up on" his legs during a pileup, as general manager Rod Graves described it.

The Cardinals expect Wells to challenge Tim Hightower for the starting job after releasing veteran Edgerrin James. Wells' history of injuries at Ohio State concerned some analysts heading into the draft.
