Cards from your youth

Are there particular sets that you really liked when you were a kid?

I have a few strong memories of a few sets:

1. 1980 Topps Football -- probably the weakest set of the 80s, big rookie was Phil Simms, but this is where I started. the Archie Manning out of the set is still one of my favorite cards, my brother gave it to me when he decided he was too old for collecting, he was 12.

2. 1984 Topps Football, the greatest set of the decade, and maybe one of the greatest sets of all time, (Rookies of HOFs Marino, Elway, Dickerson, Green, Long, Tippett, Slater and great Saints Rookies Morten Andersen, Rickey Jackson and Jim Wilks) My best memory of getting these packs is when I went to go see the Natural with Robert Redford. Before the movie started me and my best friend at the time went and bought about 15 packs each at the K&B **** store. We opened them during the previews, I remember he pulled 2 Marino rookies, he traded 1 to me for my Walter Payton (the Bears were his favorite team).

3. 1985 Fleer Baseball - the first baseball set I collected since 1980. I bought so many packs of these trying to get a Dale Murphy. Did not end up getting a Murphy until like 1991 when I eventually built the set.

4. 1989 Pro Set -- I know it is worthless, but at the time people bought this and passed on the Score, because it was the Official NFL card, and I loved the 2nd Series with the Rookies in the College unis. I had 23 Barry Sanders at one time all from packs  Aikman was a tougher pull, but I had about 32 Deion Sanders as well.

5. 1987 Topps Baseball - do not ask me why but I loved this set. Fleer and Donruss were not readily available at the time in Ruston, LA so I built like 2 or 3 sets of 87 baseball, I remember I always had a trouble finding the Terry Pendletons to complete each set.

I found this while cleaning my basement about 8 or 9 years ago

and that is how I got back into collecting.

Wish I took better care of it

1984 Topps Football - I accidently bought a pack of this as a kid, thinking it was baseball. This was my first pack of football and it got me hooked.

1990 Score Football - I bought absurd amounts of this product. I loved the rookies and all the inserts.

1986 Topps Baseball - This is about when I got huge into collecting - had to have that Cecil Fielder RC.

Action Packed - Loved these cards!!! I remember thinking the Rocket Ismail was going to be worth a fortune one day!!

I first started with baseball and some of my favorites were any of the UD Collector's Choice cards

1991 Terminator 2 trading cards got me hooked back in 91. Me and a friend bought countless packs of these things and I probably had like 4 or 5 sets. I have no clue what happened to them over the years.

Then came Marvel Comics and DC trading cards, still have a bunch of different sets from both companies. My Grandpa got hooked collecting the comic cards also.

Then he started collecting football, and after I opened box after box of 91 Proset I was hooked big time.

Favorite set was 96 Collector's Choice. For like $25 the box yielded tons of RC's, inserts.

was it score that had the black and white Bo Jackson? Well I spent every dime I had as a kid trying to pull one of those LOL oh and 1992 Score and pro set

I started out with comic cards as well.....pretty much just marvel comics....I still have the first 3 sets with the holograms and everything, and the first marvel masterpieces set.....I first started with baseball in 90 or 91 going after the nolan ryan hereos insert set, and then on to football to try to put together the impossible 91 upperdeck football set....that set was HUGE!!!

I started off buying UD Collector's Choice from basketball and football around 97-98. Always loved buying packs from those sets.

I started buying 1981 topps when I was in second grade. I remember carrying them around in my pocket with a rubber band around them. I would buy 3 packs every week at the stop n go. They were 30 cents a pack. I bet I had at least 5 of the Montana RC. Which were destroyed by me in one way or another.

I as well started with the marvel cards. I 'm not sure how i got into football but had tons of early 90's topps baseball. THink it was wild card football rookies that got meinto it.

My grandpa owned a jewelry shop and right next door was a card shop. Every time I visited down there, I would buy tons of packs of 1988 Topps baseball and 1994 Ultra Football and Baseball (loved the insert per pack and the shiny cards ).
