Continuing to add depth at the offensive tackle spot, the Cleveland Browns on Friday signed free agent George Foster, a former first-round draft choice, who was released by the Detroit Lions last week after they signed Jon Jansen.
Foster, 29, has been a starter in the league at both tackle positions and should be able to compete for playing time in Cleveland.
Contract details were not available, but it is believed Foster signed a one-year deal.
A first-round choice of Denver in the 2003 draft, Foster started mostly at right tackle in three of four seasons with the Broncos. In that span, Foster made 45 of 48 starts.
The former Georgia star was traded to the Lions in 2007, in a deal that brought cornerback Dre Bly to the Broncos. But because of some injuries and an offensive line that seemed in constant flux, Foster made only 12 starts in two seasons with the Lions.
He is the second veteran offensive tackle signed by the Browns this offseason, joining former Chicago Bears starter John St. Clair. For now, the projected starter at right tackle is veteran Ryan Tucker, but St. Clair and Foster provide depth. The line has been a problem area for Cleveland the past several seasons.
Foster has appeared in 68 games, with 57 starts.
