Anyone remember the story of the First BGS 9.5 GEM MINT wayne Gretzky Rookie card??? I Believe the story was Print in Beckett ... From what i remember someone was at the Big Toronto Sports card Expo and some big card collector bought some guys last few packs of 79-80 OPC and Pulled non other then a Wayne Gretzky Rookie Card ... and He said it was in such amazing condition he wanted to send it in to Beckett grading Services Right Away , but Not to BVG for Vintage cards like the Gretzky card is , but to the Regular BGS ... And so he sends it in and it comes back in an AMazing BGS 9.5 with i beleive Sub Grades of all 9.5 except for the Surface at 9.0 ...
I think they sold it for some ridiculas amount , but cant say for sure as it was some time ago ....
My Question For All of you on the forum ... is ... " Did you actual buy that BS Story??? "
Obviously NO Card from 79-80 would grade BGS 9.5 GEM MINT ... its impossible ... it is one of the most Condition Sensitive sets ever made ... they Used Dull Blades to cut the cardboard ... and the Cardboard was Crap Anyway ... you really think a card like that would have such Perfect Edges and Corners ... yaaa ... right ... and even by some miracle it did have that ... those cards were allways such off center its almost impossible to find one reasonably Centered ... of any cards from back in the day ...
So Beckett Grades Cards that are SHEET CUT and doesnt mention it on the label like its a REAL card ... then they actually print a story they know is Crappolla ... What are your thoughts ????
C
PS- I bought BGS cards way back when they first came out ... i had the First of almost all the BGS 9.5 rookies from the 80's ... as soon as i found out they were CUT ... I sold them in a Flash ... and i had over $25K worth ... ill never buy a BGS 9.5 card ever again ...
