Next season’s basketball market is filling up rather rapidly this season. On the heels of Upper Deck’s announcement of 2009-10 SP Game Used a few weeks back, Topps on Wednesday morning released details on 2009-10 Bowman ’48 Basketball, a hobby-exclusive product set to arrive in August.
Playing off a nostalgia recipe that has worked wonders for the company in baseball and football, Topps pays homage here to the first mainstream basketball card set, 1948 Bowman, the only one ever produced by the company.
“With our last two products, 2009-10 Bowman ’48 and 2009-10 Topps, not only will you see a lot of great content, but you’ll get a retrospect of the contribution that the Topps and Bowman brands have made over the years to basketball trading cards,” said Topps spokesman Clay Luraschi.
The product, sporting the design used for 2006 Bowman Heritage Baseball, promises three autographed cards per box and a base set that features 122 total cards, including 15 Rookies (numbered to 2,009) and seven “Basketball Plays” cards inspired by the original 1948 Bowman basketball set numbered to 1,948.
The ’48 Autographs insert incorporates signatures from 30 current and past NBA stars on stickers with Black (#’d to 48), Red (#’d to 1) and Printing Plate (#’d to 1) versions.
Locker Room Collection Autograph Relics (15 cards, #’d to 41) and Locker Room Collection Dual Patch Autographs (10 cards, #’d to 24) feature Red 1-of-1 parallels and, in the case of Locker Room Collection Autograph Relics, a black parallel #’d to 8. In addition, each case will deliver one autographed relic card numbered to 41 or less.
’48 Bowman’s 122 base cards are paralleled by Blue (#’d to 1,948), Black (#’d to 48), Red (#’d to 1) and Printing Plate (#’d to 1) versions.
