WAY OT: haha i guess its just apart of the job

***LONG READ***

sigh...well i've been working at P.F. Chang's for around 3 weeks to a month right now and i've never even imagined i'd hear this from a customer

as i was greeting the guests and starting to put down the food, they began to talk among themselves (a family of 4) and the woman says to me as im cleaning up their empty appetizers dishes, "i need you to talk to your manager and have her come over here when you're done"
puzzled, i said, okay, as soon as i'm done, i'll get her to come by. so im putting down their dishes and the kids say something about "no mom, you don't have to wait" and "mom, you dont have to see the manager" or something along those lines, but she kept saying "no, i have to".
anyways, then the mother actually gets up from her chair and walks over to talk with my manager. i still have one plate to deliver, so i place that on the table and the dad starts saying something about "blah blah blah bringing food out before finishing the appetizer is bad practice". i just chuckled and i kind of brushed it off, thinking he was kidding. he then says "no...stop laughing, im serious". right now im pretty dumbfounded by the actions of this family, so i just think F' it and get my tray and leave.

now im still thinking what in the world just happened...and i go about my shift without thinking much of it after it initially happened. i heard from the server later on that he told them "you know, we could've waited 2 hours before we served that food to ya if you would've preferred that"
too bad my managers ended up giving them a discount though

just thought i'd share and ask...besides trying to get a free meal...why in the world would they complain about fast service?

Alan, I hate to agree with their stance, but you dropped the ball on it. First, you should have noted the size of the family and estimate the speed at which they would eat their food. Then, relay the information to the kitchen and get the people fixing the food to go out of their way and cook the food out of order.....it complicates things for them, but it is ALL about this family. Then, if the food *still* comes out too soon, you just let it sit there (in the way of everything) and get cold. Then, if it does get cold, you should have a mini blow dryer with you to warm up their food.....just simple steps to provide good service:roll:

Seriously though, people like that would have probably bitched about anything.......this could quite possibly mark the first time I've ever heard someone complain about service that was too fast.

Not saying that the people were right, but if a server would have told my family and I that I would have smacked his face.

If the customers had said, wait a few before getting our orders started so we have time to nosh on the apps then thats fine for a small complaint. Personally I would have told em to f' themselves. How the hell were you to know they needed some extra time to bs on the appetizers?

Go rent the movie "waiting" with Ryan Renolds (sp?). Very good movie on how to get back at people and their food:D

I guess it is universally considered bad practice to bring food out before appetizers are finished, but personally I don't care. It takes quite a POS to actually call someone out on it.

haha awesome replies guys! and yeah, i could understand if the server had said hold the food, i'll run it out when they're ready. but they did no such thing.
anyways, its cool, i just thought it was really sad how serious they were about getting their food AFTER they were done with their appetizers and what not.
not to mention our goal at PF changs is to deliver the food with "Wok Hay" or the breath of the wok (meaning as much steam coming off of it as possible, so the guests knows it's fresh from the kitchen). oh well, haha im happy i dont have to deal with those customers again.:dance:

I agree---tell them to go watch the movie waiting. Never mess with the people that serve your food.

There are quite simply some people in life you can never please. I give everyone the benefit of the doubt once on a nitpicking issue. If they come to me with a second nitpicking issue I flat out tell them it's in our mutual best interests that their patronage continues with our competitor.

I'm not sure how high end P.F. Changs is but when I was working at Denny's, someone did that to me too. This was at 4am. I brought out the apps and the food came about 10 minutes after. IMO, 10 minutes is long enough for 2 people to finish a sampler. They would not let me put the food on the table!!! Told me they didn't want their meal until the sampler was finished....there were 3 onion rings left. I told them I'd hold it in the back and they said if their food wasn't fresh, they would make us redo it.

I said what do you think this is, The Met? and I put their food down on their table. They said they wanted to speak to the manager. I said I am the manager!

Dumb effs.
