ATHENS – Trinton Sturdivant left Georgia’s second practice of Monday injured, according to head coach Mark Richt.

It was Georgia's second two-a-day of fall camp, and it may be a very pricey one.
"He banged it up pretty good," Richt said, indicating that Sturdivant left practice to go to the hospital for tests.

Sturdivant is listed as the Dawgs’ starting left tackle - a vital position when it comes to the protection of the quarterback. He started all 13 games last season, and is being depended on as one of the top players on Georgia’s offensive line. Redshirt junior Josh Davis is listed as Sturdivant’s backup in the official depth chart for the team, but true freshman Cordy Glenn will likely get a serious look at the position with Sturdivant’s injury. Richt has commented in the past that starting guard Clint Boling can play offensive tackle - if needed.

Converted defensive lineman Kiante Tripp is the starter on the right side of the offensive line. If Sturdivant’s injury is serious enough to miss the start of the season it would mean that Georgia would have to start the season with two players with no meaningful playing experience at both tackle spots. It would also leave the Dawgs without two presumptive starters as Boling will miss the Georgia Southern game to serve a one-game suspension.

Offensive line coach Stacy Searles was not available for comment Monday night, but has only spoken with the media once since his arrival at Georgia nearly two years ago. It is unlikely that he will comment on Sturdivant, but offensive coaches are not available to the media again until Wednesday.

This is really bad. :( We need Sturdy or our line takes a big blow. I hope it isn't too serious.

Athens — It appears that Georgia left tackle Trinton Sturdivant may have suffered a season-ending knee injury in Monday's scrimmage at Sanford Stadium. If so, it could be a devastating blow to the Bulldogs' offense.

"I don't know for sure how bad it is but it swelled up pretty good," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "[Head trainer] Ron [Courson] went to the hospital to get the pictures."

Asked if he thought it was a season-ender, Richt looked down at the floor of the team-meeting room.

"You always fear that," he said. " ... It makes you sick. It's just sad."

Sturdivant, a sophomore from Wadesboro, N.C., started every game at left tackle as a true freshman last season.

Left tackle is the most important of the five offensive line positions and the most difficult to play because that player is protecting the quarterback's blind side and must contain the opponent's best pass-rusher.

With Sturdivant out, redshirt sophomore Josh Davis took the snaps with No. 1 unit. Richt said the Bulldogs could also turn to left guard Vince Vance, right guards Clint Boling or Cordy Glenn, and may consider moving over Kiante Tripp from right tackle.

"I imagine we'll look at all of that," Richt said.

The injury came midway through Monday's first game-simulation scrimmage on a play Richt said was "actually outstanding football." The quarterback was getting pressure from both defensive ends and the tackles were taking their men deep. When the quarterback stepped up in the pocket, the two tackles and two ends collided behind him and Sturdivant's leg got twisted in the pile-up.

Richt said last night that it isn't as bad as the media was claiming. He did tear "multiple ligaments", but he should be fine and ready to play next year.

That's not good. I heard he's looking at 8-9 months of rehab. Hope he makes it back for the beginning of next season.
