This Day In Sports History

Today in 1955, Mickey Mantle crushed a 550 foot home run off of the White Sox's Billy Pierce! (welcome to the majors, kid!)

Today in 1933, Jimmie Foxx hits 3 consecutive home runs as Philadelphia A's outscore the Yankees, 14 - 10. This was also notable since Foxx hit a home run in his last time up in the previous game, so that was 4 home runs in 4 at bats! Foxx was a highly underrated and almost forgotten player, best known for his years with the Boston Red Sox. Undoubtedly a great Hall of Famer!

Today in 1984, the Boston Celtics beat the LA Lakers in the famous 7th game to win the NBA Championship! No one other than the Celtics and their most devoted fans thought they had any chance at winning that year!

Celtics HOFers:
Larry Bird
Kevin McHale
Robert Parish
Dennis Johnson
K.C. Jones (Head Coach)

Lakers HOFers
Magic Johnson
Kareem Abdul Jabbar
James Worthy
Jamaal Wilkes
Bob McAdoo
Pat Riley (Head Coach)
(And how Michael Cooper is not in the Hall is just beyond me!!)

Stolen from Twitter: 60 Years Ago Today: In one of #MLB's most memorable pitching duels, Juan Marichal & Warren Spahn both sling 15 scoreless innings before Willie Mays ends the game with a HR in the bottom of the 16th, giving the #SFGiants a 1-0 win over the Milwaukee #Braves! (July 2, 1963)

Wow! Heck of a game! Can you imagine a pitcher now going a full 9 innings, much less 15??

How awesome that those two HOF pitchers had such a great duel, broken up by another great HOFer!

Two moments worth remembering today:

In 1960, Mickey Mantle hit his 300th home run, a 3-run homer vs Washington....he became only the 18th MLB player to hit 300 HRs!

20 years later, Nolan Ryan (with the Astros) struck out the Reds' Cesar Geronimo for his 3,000th strikeout. He was just the 4th pitcher to 3,000 strikeouts!

Today in 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and became the first Black player in Major League Baseball. He was a strong and courageous man, and a great ballplayer on some fantastic Brooklyn Dodgers teams!
