Taylor Hall agrees to 7-year, $42 million extension with Edmonton Oilers

While NHL owners attempt to limit term on future player contracts to five years, as they proposed to the PA last month, they also continue approving deals exceeding that length. From Wayne Simmonds to Max Pacioretty to Scott Hartnell, all of whom signed 6-year pacts recently, joining that club now is Taylor Hall, who's agreed to terms with the Edmonton Oilers on a seven year extension.

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the deal is worth $6 million a season.

It's a good deal for both sides. Hall gets his term ahead of possible contract limits in the next CBA and the Oilers lock him up through his prime years (he'll be 28 at the end of it) and should there again be a salary rollback, the deal looks even better for Edmonton.

Hall, who posted 27 goals and 53 points in 65 games last season, was set to become a restricted free agent next July. Teammate Jordan Eberle's deal is up after this season and it's no surprise that the team is looking to lock him up as well. But does Eberle deserve a similar price tag as Hall? And how much of an impact would those deals have on future ones for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov?
