The Minnesota Vikings were expecting to miss wide receiver Sidney Rice(notes) for the first half of the season as he recovers from hip surgery.

Now, he’s guaranteed to be out at least six weeks. That is because the Vikings placed him on the physically unable to perform list. That means the latest that Rice could return, according to rules of PUP, is Dec. 5 in a game against the Buffalo Bills, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The question is what is the team going to do for targets for quarterback Brett Favre(notes) while his No. 1 man is out. The hope is that veteran Bernard Berrian(notes) will be ready for a more significant role. Greg Camarillo(notes) should turn into a nice addition from Miami. Then there is veteran Javon Walker(notes), who made a nifty 25-yard touchdown reception in the preseason victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

“The ball he caught in the game was a great ball,” offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said. “It looked like something Sidney Rice would do for us last year. We're looking for that kind of player, to be able to make some of those catches where it's a moment-of-truth catch and both guys are going for it. I still want to see some more out of him in the last game.”
