WASHINGTON - The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Tomas Vokoun from the Washington Capitals then signed the veteran goaltender to a two-year deal.

Vokoun, whose negotiating rights were traded for a seventh-round pick in the upcoming NHL draft, will make US$4 million with Pittsburgh.

The 35-year-old goalie, who waived a no-movement clause in order for the trade to happen, was set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

The move gives Pittsburgh an established backup to starter Marc-Andre Fleury, who tied his career high by appearing in 67 games last season.

Vokoun finished the regular season 25-17-2 with a 2.51 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage after signing a one-year deal.

He suffered a serious groin injury in March and lost the starting job to rookie Braden Holtby, who led the Capitals to the second round of the playoffs.

Vokoun has 287 career wins along with a 2.55 GAA and .917 save percentage in 680 career games for Montreal, Nashville, Florida and Washington.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired goaltender Tomas Vokoun from the Washington Capitals for a seventh-round draft pick.

Vokoun spent only one season with the Capitals and is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He was signed last summer as one of several veterans pegged help the team win its first Stanley Cup.

But Vokoun hurt his groin late in the season and sat out the playoffs. With the emergence of Braden Holtby in the postseason, the Capitals are set at goalie with Holtby and Michal Neuvirth.

The 35-year-old Vokoun finished with a record of 25-17-2 and a .917 save percentage in 48 games for Capitals. He has also played for Montreal, Nashville and Florida in his NHL career.

The trade was announced Monday.

Niot sure what to make of this, but Vokoun is a starter in my opinion, so is he really gonna be Marc-Andre Fleury's backup, or are they gonna move Fleury? Hmmm.
