An altercation last month between football and men's basketball players at Kansas has become the subject of a police investigation.
Kansas University police Maj. Chris Keary said a disorderly conduct investigation has been opened in the case of a brawl that took place the night of Sept. 22, in which men's basketball player Tyshawn Taylor sustained a dislocated thumb that will sideline him for up to a month.
It was the first of at least two fights involving members of the university's highest-profile athletic teams.
Once a report on that probe is completed, it will be forwarded to local prosecutors to determine whether charges will be filed, the Kansas City Star reported.
"We have enough information to write up an incident report," Keary said, according to the report.
Police had initially said that fight, which involved as many as 100 people, was not being investigated as a crime.
A witness reported that one football player was shoved down a few stairs, and Taylor was taken to the hospital. He later said on his Facebook page that he was injured while throwing a punch. Days later he apologized, saying the situation embarrassed the university and both teams.
A second altercation involving members of both teams took place the next morning, in an apparent resumption of the previous night's hostilities.
In the days that followed, athletic director Lew Perkins met with members of both teams, saying it was "as mad as I've been in a long time."
