The Gone But Not Forgotten Thread

I missed this on the 20th, Willis Reed, Hall of Fame center for the NY Knicks passed away at age 80. He may be best remembered for playing through a leg injury to lead the Knicks to the 1970 NBA Championship!

Catching up on a few passings from earlier this year, two classic MLB players, the A's Sal Bando passed at 78:

And the Yankees' Joe Pepitone passed at 82:

Two more NFL legends who passed, and I missed!

Conrad Dobler, a tough player for the Cardinals in the 70s died at age 72:

and Bud Grant, Hall of Fame coach who brought the Vikings to 4 Super Bowls during his career passed at age 95:

Ricou Browning passed on 2.27.23, which I missed somehow. Here is a short obituary From Entertainment Weekly:

"The actor who donned the Gill-man suit in extensive underwater sequences in Creature From the Black Lagoon, died Feb. 27 at 93. Browning, who reportedly could hold his breath for up to four minutes, was widely considered the last surviving actor to have played one of the original Universal monsters. He reprised the role in two sequels to the original 1954 film. Browning also worked extensively in marine coordination for television and film, often directing underwater sequences, including scenes in Thunderball, Never Say Never, and Caddyshack. He was also the creative force behind Flipper, both the movie and the TV series, directing 37 episodes of the television show and co-writing the film."

Ricou was a prolific autograph signer for decades, and reputed to be a very nice man in person. He made hundreds of appearances at conventions over the years, and charged a small fee through the mail, which really could have been a lot more, considering his stature in the monster movie community, and also considering the fact that he was the last of the principal cast members of any of those movies who was still living.

Here is the most famous scene from the movie, it has come to be known as the "underwater ballet":

And as soon as I read about Ricou, I also found that Ginger Stanley Hallowell passed away on 1.19.23 at age 91.

She swam for Julia Adams in the Creature of the Black Lagoon, in the above scene.

Al Jaffee, a cartoonist who worked for MAD Magazine for some 65 years passed away at 102! He had retired at age 99 in 2020, and while I have never read an issue of MAD, I gotta respect a man who loved his craft so much!

Chris Smith, defensive end for several NFL teams, passed away yesterday at age 31. A very sad passing, as his girlfriend had been struck by a car and died at age 26 in 2019.

A few passings that I missed:

Cedric Henderson passed on April 5th. He was a high school phenom who was involved in one of the first widely publicized NCAA recruiting scandals with Georgia, passed at the young age of 57. This SI article from 1985 details his transient upbringing and schooling issues. https://vault.si.com/vault/1985/02/25/scorecard

Also, Bob Berry, a QB who played on 3 Vikings Super Bowl teams in the 70s passed away at age 81 on the 17th.

And another passing on the 21st, a great American and hero of WWII, Ken Potts passed away at age 102 years.

Ken was most distinguished for being one of two USS Arizona survivors still living, along with Lou Conter, who turns 102 later this year. I wrote to Ken for the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor in 2021, and his response is so cool!

Ken is referring to Honey Bend, Illinois, which is quite close to where I work, and our family camps there occasionally as well, not far from the very farm Ken grew up on! I figured he looked at the return address on my envelope and recognized that we are from the same area, albeit he was born 60 years before me!

Jerry Springer passed away at age 79 this morning.

dick groat 92
Thanks @tiggerfan112534@yaho I had not seen that. Dick was such a nice man, he signed many customs for me over the years and was always so generous. He won the 1960 WS with the Pirates, and the 1964 series with the Cardinals, both times beating the Yankess, which was no small feat in the 60s!

This is a nice story about Mr. Groat from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
