America's Top High Schools....

I would love to see a politician openly admit that parent involvement is the number one factor in student achievement.

Give me a struggling student and 90% of the time the parents are either not there, dont care, or tell their child that school is not important.

Also income plays a major role, look at that list. Expensive private schools and public schools in high income locations. The Washington high schools on that list are in the Microsoft money area.

Our politicians have no clue what is really going on in education or refuse to admit it because he would be a poor political decision.

I'm impressed by the number of public high schools that made the list. I thought that private high schools would have the edge, but here are some of the local high schools that made the list:

Mission San Jose High
Alameda County, Fremont, California 71.1

Monta Vista High
Santa Clara County, Cupertino, California

Henry M. Gunn High
Santa Clara County, Palo Alto, California

Saratoga High
Santa Clara County, Saratoga, California

Lynbrook High
Santa Clara County, San Jose, California

Palo Alto High
Santa Clara County, Palo Alto, California

Just curious........are you aware if these schools are located in upscale neighborhoods or in the rougher parts?

Many private schools are on this list. The main criteria for this list is how many kids in the school's population are taking advanced courses such as AP and IB.

Call me ignorant but what is a magnet school?? One that recruits?

I don't know about other places, but the ones here are just public schools for the gifted. Instead of going to a large public school, the real smart ones get pulled out and go to a smaller school that has better faculty, classes, etc. but is still publically funded.

The two Palo Alto schools are affluent and so is the Cupertino high school and Saratoga High School (avg house price being over $1 million). The Fremont high school and San Jose high school aren't in affluent areas.

I thought I saw a bunch of private schools listed - but looks like there are charter schools - I don't know what those are. It looks like the students have to apply though.

Gunn High School #66

Went there for 2 years before I moved. Pretty good school. Might be a bit overrated though. IMO, it definitely benefits from its affluent surroundings.

These have to be public schools, right? My town's public school is on there and while it has a great reputation, does not measure up to the private schools in the area.

Yeah that's what I thought as well (and that's what I heard on the radio when the local schools were revealed).

If it included private schools there is no way a local school called Lakeside wouldn't be on there (Both Bill Gates and Paul Allen went there, and they consistently receive HUGE donations from them...including 96 Million from Gates last year )
