The Gone But Not Forgotten Thread

While not a household name, Tom Hornbein passed away on 5.6.23 at age 92. He was on the team of Americans who first climbed Mt. Everest in 1963, and while Jim Whitaker was the first American ever to summit Everest, he and another climber took a different route. Tom made it by climbing the very treacherous West Ridge with the Whitaker expedition in 1963. As you can see from the map:

The West Ridge is very steep, and is a straight shot to the summit. Typically climbers take a more winding route that is less steep, but Hornbein climbed the Ridge with his team and made it up and back!

Don Denkinger, famous for his blown call in the 1985 World Series, passed yesterday at age 86. He was humble and always reminded people that we are only human and make mistakes!

I didn't remember Jim as a football player, though I know he was an all time great:

I DO remember Jim as an actor, and loved him as the tough coach Montezuma Monroe in Any Given Sunday!!

While not a household name, a name very well known among sports writers circles.... Rick Hummel passed away at the age of 77 here in Saint Louis on May 20th.

He was known as "The Commish" among baseball writers, and had just recently retired from the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch.

I learned something new today! Chas Newby passed away. Originally from Liverpool, he filled in on bass for Stu Sutcliffe with the Beatles in December of 1960 for 2 weeks! Known as the 2 Week Beatle, he played also with an incarnation of the band The Quarrymen, which the Beatles were originally known.
