Newbie Here Saying Hello

What's up everyone?!

I collected cards as a kid (primarily baseball but some football and basketball from the 80's and 90's), and now am a father who's son is starting to get into the hobby hence bringing me back into it.

I grew up in Wisconsin (though now live in the Atlanta suburbs) so I'm still a fan of all WI teams (and the owner of 1 stock in the Packers).

I'll poke around the forum before asking too many dumb questions but was curious where does everyone recommend buying new unopened cards? Is it Walmart, Amazon, and local card shops, or are there better websites you all would recommend?

Cheers!

Welcome to SCC!

We have been finding more stuff at Target/Wal-Mart than the old standby online ordering places - at better prices as well.

Cool, I bought 2 boxes over the past week, 1 at Walmart and 1 at a local card shop, both the same boxes but Walmart was a little cheaper. Was gonna pick up another at Walmart but they were all gone when I checked again which is what got my curious if I should be looking in more places.

I've been scanning eBay for some specific graded singles I'm interested in, but other than that I'm good with unopened packs/boxes and hoping to pull something valuable. I follow more basketball and football so likely will stick to those but baseball isn't out of the question.

Welcome to SCC!

We do a lot of group breaks here, mostly baseball and some hockey recently. Would be fun to do some basketball and football if enough people would be interested.

All the best,
Mike

I'd potentially be in for a football or basketball break. I've never done one but at least have a rough understanding of them.

Next dumb question, what are "parallels"?

Great!

Parallel cards are variations of the base cards (i.e. gold cards, refractor cards, prizm cards, etc.).

Welcome to The Club, @sandcar3! I agree with everyone else. If you're looking for retail, Target and Walmart seem to be the best, when you can find things in stock. If you're wanting hobby boxes (more expensive but better chance at better cards), I'd recommend Dacardworld or just your LCS if you have one.

Appreciate the response. I saw a few links to Dacardworld when looking through other threads here so I'm definitely checking them out. I did find a pretty good local shop not too far from me as well. I'll definitely be looking around more at Target and Walmart when I'm there (my son always wants to look at/get Pokémon cards anyway).

Side note, just got my first PSA card:

Nice one, congrats! I love graded cards. They're a little more expensive, but that way you don't have to worry about anything happening to them and they generally hold their value over time. Well, at least with veteran players. I guess with recent rookies it's a little more up in the air, but assuming Taylor pans out, that one will probably only go up. It's a 10 too! Nice!

Yep, as a Badger fan I watched all his college games and barring injury I think he'll have a good career. Card was pretty cheap and since I'm not looking to flip it I figured it was a good starting point.

Somewhat related Wisconsin's successor to Taylor is Braelon Allen and he has all the potential in the world I'll be getting any of his cards once he declares for the draft (was just a freshman this past season).

@sandcar3 welcome friend! So nice that you and your son collect together! I have 3 kids and none of them could care less about cards, but hey, they all have their own things they enjoy! Happy to have you here, its a lot of fun and a great community!

Blessings,

Kevin

Appreciate the welcome (even if you are a Bears fan) 😀

My son got exposed to Pokémon cards from his after school karate class, after that I showed him all the old cards I had and he was hooked on both. Now he'll get a pack of his and I'll get a pack of mine and open them together. It's pretty awesome and I likely wouldn't have ever gotten back in it again if it wasn't for him.
