Missing or never released 2006 Fleer Tradition Signature Tradition cards? Or card that was never meant to be?

I have a 2006 Fleer Tradition Signature Tradition Magenta Printing plate of Sean Casey Pirates 1/1. According to Beckett this does not exist.

Casey does NOT have a Signature tradition card in the set. He DOES have a Traditional THREADS card and corresponding printing plates, but the card design is completely different that my printing plate.

So what the heck do I have? Is this an error of Fleer's part for not providing the entire checklist to Beckett? Is this a mistake by Beckett by not inputting the entire checklist? Was the Signature Tradition Casey card never supposed to be released? One theory is that this card was "back doored" out of Fleer during their bankruptcy before/during the Upper Deck acquisition of them. Notice the Threads cards has him in a Red Jersey but a Pirates logo on the back. He was traded around the same time as the UD acquisition.

My guess would be that they never could secure an auto from Casey for this set so they either slipped those in anyways or, like you said, someone ended up taking them out in their pocket!

Either way, that's a pretty awesome piece to have in the collection.

As a sidebar, I'm left wondering how it even got graded if it, technically, didn't exist. I'm surprised it wasn't just sent back as a fake or something if there is no existence of the card in any checklist.

I used to work for the company. There research team was um...yeah, they graded anything if someone paid. We could not grade/authenticate our own cards. I slowed done the process too much as I was overly through on the research end.

Nice! I always thought it'd be a cool job to have, working for a grading company. I'd be great, and terrible, at that job. I'm OCD when it comes to card condition so I know I'd be great in that aspect. However, I think I'd do a terrible job, like you, of keeping up my quotas. It'd take me a good 5 minutes to grade a card, and I have a feeling 1 minute might be pushing it for some of these folks. I could be wrong, and hope I am, but I've seen some pretty badly mis-graded cards (my opinion) through the years.

I never was an official grader. Although I do have a good eye, know what to look for, learned a lot and how to do it and came up with the same grades as the lead grader did on a lot of cards. I was marketing/PR and a researcher.

This probably came out in the bankruptcy. I remember getting "reimbursed" for outstanding redemptions back then and I got cards that were not in guides or on checklists. So my guess this is the same thing, these cards were produced with the intention of getting them into the product, but maybe he did not sign or was on an exclusive signature contract with someone else at the time.

That whole bankruptcy debacle was a joke, I never really got the value of the redemptions that were not redeemed and got a pile of er "junk" in exchange.
